She Who Chose War: from dream to novel

As some of you may already know, She Who Chose War was inspired by a dream that I had over five years ago. Many of the story elements changed from the dream to the novel releasing later this month, but much of the original concepts remain. I thought it would be fun to share what the original held so you can go back and see these variations after you read, or keep them in mind for when you do read!

Please note: I discuss what does not happen in the story, so no specific spoilers, but do proceed with caution if you want to be completely surprised.

Nevia was originally named Sable, and originally she was a warrior. I felt it didn’t fit the gentle animal whisperer that she is, however, so instead she is really only proficient at a simple dagger, and only marginally can wield a bow.

Darius’ name switched from Jarius to Darius. No real reason why, except that I felt Darius better suited him.

Ardan and Darius killed each other in the original concept.

The seer was originally Nevia’s best friend who traveled with her from her native homeland, but for the sake of plot this was changed.

There was originally more spice. 😉

Khatalia was inspired from an anime character and was intended to be only a side-character to make a rare appearance. I quickly fell in love with her, however, and she demanded to take a major role in the story. Naturally, I let her. And originally she was Natalia.

The Feishin Kingdom was not in the dream at all, but my love for East Asian culture and my craving for intense political intrigue brought it into the plot, and I’m glad for it, as the Feishin royals became some of my personal favorite characters. Qirin may perhaps be my favorite character.

In the very early drafts of She Who Chose War, Nevia nearly drowned on a voyage to a culture reminiscent to Medieval Europe.
